Auction, Photo Contest, Family Activities and More!
For the past several years, we have celebrated Keep Wildlife in the Wild Week in late June. We're not going to do that anymore.
Instead, we are declaring all of June to be Keep Wildlife in the Wild Month! (Watch me explain!)
Animals face substantial and, in all too many cases, worsening survival challenges on our planet. At Born Free USA, we give them our attention, our compassion, our advocacy, every day of every year. Next month we will concentrate on spreading our signature message: Keep Wildlife in the Wild. Our plans include:
- Action Alerts throughout the month, each featuring a Born Free USA campaign: Wildlife Trade, Trapping and Fur, Exotic "Pets," Animals in Entertainment and our Primate Sanctuary. We'll discuss the hot issues in each campaign, suggest how you can help, and propose family activities, among other things.
- The annual Keep Wildlife in the Wild online auction, which this year will include more than a dozen diverse items, among them the DVD of "An Elephant Called Slowly" signed by Born Free co-founder Virginia McKenna; a one-year subscription to online vegan cooking classes by award-winning chef Mark Reinfeld; two nights at the Carlyle Suites Hotel in Washington, DC; and a Tofu XPress. All proceeds go directly toward our work to protect animals.
- Our inaugural "How I'm Going Wild for Animals This Summer" essay contest! We're asking school-age kids to submit short essays (100 words maximum) about why wildlife belongs in the wild: Say what wildlife they hope to see this summer, and how; detail what steps they intend to take to help protect wildlife; share a story about encountering wildlife in the past; or really anything that shows how students love wild animals. We'll offer prizes in each of three age categories: 10 and younger, 11-14 and 15-18.
- Our second annual Keep Wildlife in the Wild Photo Contest. Send us a candid picture you take of any animal who lives in the wild and you could win our top prize, a Born Free USA merchandise gift basket. Don't send us any photographs quite yet, though, because in order to qualify you must take the picture in June 2012!
Let's make this June as compassionate as it can be by doing all we can to support wildlife — and by recruiting family and friends to do the same.
For the animals,
P.S. ThinkSpace Art Gallery in Culver City, CA, through June 9 is hosting an exhibit, "Wild at Heart: Keep Wildlife in the Wild," from which 20 percent of all sales go to Born Free USA. Check out what's available (you can purchase the artworks online) and watch a 6-minute video we shot of the exhibit's grand opening!
