State's Now Safer for Animals and Humans
I'm excited to share good news with you!
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation, drafted by Born Free USA, that tightens oversight on the dwindling number of New Yorkers who possess exotic "pets." The need for our bill is illustrated by situations such as this one from our Exotic Animal Incidents database, in which authorities found several dead exotic "pets" in a Phoenix, NY, apartment that had contained 70 animals.
While keeping exotic animals as pets is illegal in New York, people who owned exotic animals prior to the ban have been allowed to keep the animals. Assembly Bill 10041/Senate Bill 7078 requires those individuals to report any animal escapes and pay for the associated damages. It also allows authorities to take action against individuals whose animals escape repeatedly.
Born Free USA has been working for several months to pass this important legislation. We are thankful to steadfastly compassionate legislators Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal (D-Manhattan) and Sen. Mark Grisanti (R-Buffalo), and to the other legislators who helped pass this bill.
We also thank you for your support! None of our work would be possible without your continued involvement.
Until next time,
