Adopt Two Primates for the Price of One!
With Valentine’s Day approaching, love is in the air. But from where I am writing today, that air is pretty cold. Here at the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary, an Arctic front has descended, bringing wind gusts up to 30 mph and “hard freeze” nighttime lows that have plummeted into the teens.
I just spent $1,000 on new propane heaters to get us through this extra chilly time. YOU CAN HELP us survive a cold February by participating in our special two-for-one adoption promotion!
Most of our macaques, vervets and baboons — we care for some 500 primates here — are not conditioned for such wintry weather. Their native habitats tend to be along the Equator and in the tropics. Down here in the south Texas scrub, where shelter is in short supply, the snow monkeys do well with the extra-cold snaps. But for most primates, this type of weather is to be endured, not enjoyed.
The sanctuary staff and I do what we can, setting up hay-filled boxes, monitoring and installing extra heaters for the elderly and sensitive primates, and whatever else we can think of to provide warmth. Similarly, in the hot, dusty summers we do all we can to provide shade and respite from the heat. Whatever Mother Nature throws our way, for everything we do here to protect primates from the elements, we depend on the generosity of donors to make it possible.
All of which makes me pleased to tell you about one special way you can help. From now through Valentine’s Day, you can “adopt” one of our primates for $52 a year and receive a second adoption for free! Pick one monkey for yourself and another for your loved one; each of you will receive a full adoption packet that includes a photograph and the back story of your adoptee, whether it’s Carly, Joey, Khy, Mig or Shawshank. While you’re in a loving mood, please take advantage of our free Valentine’s Day eCard program! Choose from among three colorful designs, all depicting primates at our sanctuary.
Here’s hoping you feel the full flame of romance on Valentine’s Day. And if you’d send a little bit of that warmth our way, we would be most appreciative!
Until next time,
P.S. You can help us in immediate, tangible ways by purchasing items from the wish lists on our website and, where prices range from $1 to $70, on Amazon.
