Legislative, Photographic and Mercantile Triumphs!

VICTORY! A Much-Needed Break for Bears in New York
New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo officially has signed our bear gallbladder/bile trade bill into law. Our team members in the Empire State contributed mightily to Born Free USA's effort to shut down the trade in bear gallbladders and bile, which leads to poaching of America's black bears. We will closely monitor the situation in New York and work to enact similar legislation in other states in the year to come. Meanwhile, please read more about our bear campaigns and consider helping us in our protective pursuits by making a donation.

TAKE TWO! Private Eye Has Animals in Sharp Focus
Congratulations to Betsy Seeton of Taylor Park, Colo., for winning Born Free USA's first Keep Wildlife in the Wild Photo Contest! Her triumph is doubly impressive because she won both the Backyard and Worldwide categories, and as such will receive both first-place prizes — a photo printer and a pair of binoculars. Scores of photographs were submitted and more than 1,500 votes cast in our competition. We thank everyone who participated and encourage all of you — as you're being respectful of all wildlife, of course! — to take cool photographs of wildlife and enter them in our next contest.

CAT'S MEOW! Wisconsin Pet Supply Store Is Voted the Best
We'd also like to congratulate Mound Pet Food Warehouse in Sun Prairie, WI, for winning Born Free USA's first Compassionate Pet Supply Store of the Year award! Mound, the winner you voted for, and Pet Food Express of San Francisco, chosen by our staff, will receive a certificate of recognition, an announcement in local media, and a free advertisement on our Pet Supply Locator. Mound was lauded for its friendly staff, reasonable prices and outreach efforts such as hosting cat adoptions. Pet Food Express makes generous donations to shelters and animal rescue groups. If you haven't done so already, surf over to the locator (it's been adapted for handheld devices, too) and find stores in your area that don't sell live animals.
