Tom and Misha Released from Sea Pen off Turkey
Today I have some wonderful news to share with you about Tom and Misha, a pair of bottlenose dolphins Born Free rescued from a Turkish resort's polluted pool nearly two years ago. We've been rehabilitating them ever since in a sea pen in the Aegean Sea — until, that is, last week, when we opened the pen's door and away Tom and Misha swam, back into the wild!
This was an enormously rewarding moment for all of us involved in the project, including my mother, Born Free co-founder Virginia McKenna. She was there to witness the dolphins' liberating moment: "They paused and then they seemed to leap for joy as the barriers were finally removed," she said. (Watch the video!)
Only through the generous donations made by Born Free supporters could these dolphins have been saved from the certain sadness and unnatural death they faced at that Hisaronu resort. This was a costly, complicated and creative operation that overcame several hurdles along the way but ultimately got us to the much-awaited release.
Of course, it's far too early to say whether Tom and Misha are going to thrive in the wild, from which they were seized six or seven years ago. The early signs are promising, though, and we will keep you posted to the extent we can.
Thank you all for your support of these beautiful creatures. May they live long and happy lives of absolute freedom.
For the animals,
